David Stoilescu is one of the best Brazilian jiu-jitsu athletes in the world, and one of the most technically gifted grapplers to have ever stepped on the mat at Academy 411 in Sydney. Originally from Canada, David earned his black belt in approximately five to six years of training — a timeline that reflects not just natural ability, but an extraordinary level of dedication and technical development that most BJJ practitioners never reach regardless of how long they train. In a sport where the average black belt takes a decade or more, David’s trajectory stands out as one of the most accelerated in Australian BJJ.
He is a three-time ADCC Trials medallist and an IBJJF World Championship medallist — two of the most competitive and prestigious achievements in submission grappling. ADCC Trials alone draws hundreds of elite competitors from across Australia and the world, and medalling three times over is a mark of sustained excellence at the highest level of no-gi BJJ. Combined with his IBJJF Worlds medal, David’s competition record places him among the elite of Australian — and global — Brazilian jiu-jitsu. These are not participation results — they are podium finishes at events that define careers.
David is based out of Sydney West Martial Arts but dedicates four sessions per week to coaching at Academy 411 in Rosebery. For students training no-gi BJJ in Sydney, that access is genuinely rare. Athletes of David’s calibre do not typically make themselves available to the general public at this frequency — and the fact that Academy 411 students get four sessions a week with a world-level BJJ competitor is a significant advantage that is hard to find at any other BJJ gym in Sydney.
His teaching style is quiet and methodical. He does not fill sessions with noise — he fills them with detail. David breaks technique down to its most fundamental components and builds from there, with a precision that comes directly from years of competing and winning at the highest levels of no-gi BJJ. Students who train under David consistently report that his instruction changes the way they think about jiu-jitsu entirely — not just the specific techniques they are learning, but the underlying concepts and principles that make those techniques work under pressure against resisting opponents.
David’s no-gi BJJ classes at Academy 411 in Sydney are geared toward adult students who are serious about their development. The sessions are technical, focused, and run at a high standard. If you are looking to improve quickly and understand the game at a deeper level, training under David is one of the most direct routes available in Sydney.
Whether you are a competitive grappler preparing for your next ADCC Trials or submission grappling event, or a complete beginner stepping onto the mat for the first time, David’s sessions are built to meet you where you are. His ability to simplify complex no-gi BJJ concepts makes him just as effective with white belts as he is with experienced competitors. Beginners benefit enormously from learning foundational technique from someone who understands the game at the deepest level — the fundamentals David teaches are the same ones that have taken him to world-level competition.
The calibre of coaching at a BJJ gym defines the ceiling for its students. Having a coach of David’s level teaching no-gi BJJ in Sydney four times a week is a genuine point of difference for Academy 411 — one that is felt in the quality of every session he runs. For anyone searching for no-gi BJJ in Sydney, jiu-jitsu near me, or a BJJ gym where the standard of instruction is genuinely world class, David’s classes at Academy 411 in Rosebery are where serious grapplers and beginners alike come to improve.

I joined Academy 411 last year having never tried Jiu jitsu before, the owners/staff immediately made me feel at home and comfortable. The gym is one of the most welcoming environments I’ve ever had the pleasure of being apart of and 411 feels like a family. On top of that the coaches are constantly adapting techniques/game-plans to be on top of the constantly evolving sport that modern jiu jitsu has become allowing members to evolve with the sport and constantly up their game. 10/10 would recommend also neurodivergent friendly 😎Posted on Maab18 March 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Academy 411 has been an incredible addition to my jits routine. They offer a "Traitor Membership," which is perfect for those who already train elsewhere but want to supplement their training with quality sessions (me). The gym facilities itself are top-tier with great matspace, an aesthetic vibe and some of the cleanest bathrooms I’ve seen at a jits gym. There’s a strong competition focus with a diverse range of athletes, from hobbyists to serious competitors, making every session a great mix of technical work and hard rounds. Also super nice and friendly peeps. I train both gi and nogi here, and both programs are solid, with a good balance of instruction and intensity. An excellent place to train. Highly recommend for anyone looking to cross-train!Posted on Kogar Cetinich15 March 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
