Jakub Kacenak is pound for pound one of the best freestyle wrestlers in Australia, and the driving force behind Academy 411’s wrestling program in Sydney. Born and raised in Slovakia, Jakub grew up immersed in Eastern European wrestling culture — one of the most technically demanding and competitive environments on the planet. From a young age he trained alongside elite wrestlers, including Russian competitors whose influence shaped his understanding of timing, level changes, and the relentless pressure that defines high-level wrestling.
After years of competing and refining his craft in Europe, Jakub made Sydney home and brought his expertise with him. His arrival at Academy 411 marked a turning point for the academy’s competitive athletes. Wrestling is widely recognised as the most effective tool for controlling where a grappling match takes place — and for no-gi BJJ competitors in particular, elite takedown ability is the difference between winning and losing before the ground game even begins.
Jakub’s wrestling program is designed specifically for BJJ and no-gi grappling athletes in Sydney. Rather than adapting a pure folkstyle or Greco-Roman curriculum, Jakub teaches freestyle wrestling with a clear focus on what works when the fight hits the mat. His sessions cover shot selection, level changes, underhook battles, body lock takedowns, and the defensive wrestling needed to keep a match standing or take it down on your own terms.
Sessions close with live wrestling rounds that sharpen timing, athleticism, and competitive instinct in a way that traditional BJJ drilling simply cannot replicate. Classes run three times per week — the consistent repetition required to make wrestling a natural part of your no-gi game.
Jakub’s technical standards have produced real results. Several athletes he has coached at Academy 411 now compete internationally, representing Australia at the highest levels of submission grappling and no-gi BJJ. His ability to identify technical weaknesses and fix them quickly is what sets him apart — he sees the sport through the lens of a lifelong competitor, not just a teacher.
Beyond competition preparation, Jakub has helped recreational students develop confidence in the standing phase of grappling that transforms their entire game. Understanding takedowns changes how an athlete moves, how they clinch, and how they think about distance management — skills that carry directly into no-gi BJJ rounds.
Anyone who has trained with Jakub knows his passion for wrestling extends well beyond the mat. He is known for staying after class to drill with students, breaking down techniques in granular detail and sharing stories about the history of wrestling in Eastern Europe. He makes his own tea, talks endlessly about the old Soviet wrestling machine, and has a laugh you will hear from the other side of the gym.
If you are looking for wrestling classes in Sydney that are built for BJJ and no-gi competition, Jakub’s sessions at Academy 411 are where serious grapplers train.

None of the cultish or autocratic behaviour of some other bjj gyms. High level, and always teaching the meta of current grappling combined with great fundamentals. I joined Academy 411 last year having never tried Jiu jitsu before, the owners/staff immediately made me feel at home and comfortable. The gym is one of the most welcoming environments I’ve ever had the pleasure of being apart of and 411 feels like a family. On top of that the coaches are constantly adapting techniques/game-plans to be on top of the constantly evolving sport that modern jiu jitsu has become allowing members to evolve with the sport and constantly up their game. 10/10 would recommend also neurodivergent friendly 😎Posted on Maab18 March 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Academy 411 has been an incredible addition to my jits routine. They offer a "Traitor Membership," which is perfect for those who already train elsewhere but want to supplement their training with quality sessions (me). The gym facilities itself are top-tier with great matspace, an aesthetic vibe and some of the cleanest bathrooms I’ve seen at a jits gym. There’s a strong competition focus with a diverse range of athletes, from hobbyists to serious competitors, making every session a great mix of technical work and hard rounds. Also super nice and friendly peeps. I train both gi and nogi here, and both programs are solid, with a good balance of instruction and intensity. An excellent place to train. Highly recommend for anyone looking to cross-train!Posted on Kogar Cetinich15 March 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
