Sirena Allen De Guzman is one of the best female Brazilian jiu-jitsu athletes in Australia, and one of the most compelling stories on the Sydney BJJ scene. Originally from Oregon, USA, Sirena grew up training jiu-jitsu from a young age — building the kind of deep technical foundation that only comes from years on the mat before adulthood. That early start set the trajectory for everything that followed, and it is the reason she arrived in Sydney already operating at a level that most BJJ practitioners spend a decade working toward.
She currently holds the female bantamweight championship on two of Australia’s premier no-gi BJJ promotions — Subversion Invitational and M16 — making her one of the most decorated active female grapplers in the country. Those titles were not handed to her. They came from years of consistent training across both gi BJJ and no-gi, a willingness to compete regularly, and the kind of technical sharpness that only develops through genuine high-level competition. With her sights now set on the IBJJF World Championships and ADCC — the most prestigious events in submission grappling — she is pushing her BJJ career onto the international stage where Australia’s best go to measure themselves against the world.
Sirena works full-time as a firefighter — a career that demands a level of physical and mental toughness that most people will never experience. Managing elite-level BJJ competition alongside a full-time emergency services career is not something many athletes attempt, let alone succeed at. The discipline required to train twice a day, compete at the top of Australian BJJ, and perform in a high-stakes profession simultaneously speaks volumes about who Sirena is as an athlete and as a person.
Her shift schedule means she does not hold a fixed class slot at Academy 411, but she is in the gym training twice a day whenever her roster allows and regularly teaches morning sessions and steps in to cover classes for other coaches. If you train BJJ in Sydney at Academy 411 consistently, you will cross paths with Sirena on the mat — and those sessions are worth showing up for.
Sirena’s classes cover both gi BJJ and no-gi BJJ, reflecting the well-rounded training environment at Academy 411 in Sydney. Her technique is sharp and competition-tested, drawn from active campaigning at the highest level of professional grappling. She coaches with the same directness she competes with — clear, efficient, and focused on what actually works under pressure.
For anyone training gi or no-gi BJJ in Sydney, getting mat time with an active double champion is a rare opportunity. Sirena does not teach from memory or from a curriculum she put together years ago — she teaches from what she is actively refining and competing with right now. That makes a measurable difference to the quality of instruction, particularly for students training with BJJ competition in mind.
Her approach is equally effective for beginners. The same clarity that makes her a precise and efficient competitor makes her a straightforward and patient coach. She meets students where they are and builds from there, whether you are brand new to jiu-jitsu or preparing for your next submission grappling event.
Sirena is one of the most visible examples in Australian BJJ of what female athletes can achieve in the sport. For women searching for gi BJJ or no-gi BJJ classes in Sydney — whether you are stepping onto the mat for the first time or you are an experienced grappler looking for a gym where women compete at the highest level — Sirena’s presence on the coaching team at Academy 411 sends a clear message about the culture and standards here.
The path from beginner to double champion runs through consistent training, quality coaching, and the right environment. Sirena has walked that path from the ground up, and she brings the full perspective — as a lifelong BJJ practitioner, as an active competitor in both gi BJJ Sydney and no-gi, and as a coach — to every class she teaches. If you are looking for women’s BJJ or jiu-jitsu near you in Sydney, this is where that journey starts.
When she is not training or on shift, Sirena enjoys walking her dog, lifting weights, and spending time with friends.

None of the cultish or autocratic behaviour of some other bjj gyms. High level, and always teaching the meta of current grappling combined with great fundamentals. Some Of the best coaches available in Aus. Couldn’t be happier to be training here in Sydney.Posted on Alberto Mangas7 April 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I joined Academy 411 last year having never tried Jiu jitsu before, the owners/staff immediately made me feel at home and comfortable. The gym is one of the most welcoming environments I’ve ever had the pleasure of being apart of and 411 feels like a family. On top of that the coaches are constantly adapting techniques/game-plans to be on top of the constantly evolving sport that modern jiu jitsu has become allowing members to evolve with the sport and constantly up their game. 10/10 would recommend also neurodivergent friendly 😎Posted on Maab18 March 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Academy 411 has been an incredible addition to my jits routine. They offer a "Traitor Membership," which is perfect for those who already train elsewhere but want to supplement their training with quality sessions (me). The gym facilities itself are top-tier with great matspace, an aesthetic vibe and some of the cleanest bathrooms I’ve seen at a jits gym. There’s a strong competition focus with a diverse range of athletes, from hobbyists to serious competitors, making every session a great mix of technical work and hard rounds. Also super nice and friendly peeps. I train both gi and nogi here, and both programs are solid, with a good balance of instruction and intensity. An excellent place to train. Highly recommend for anyone looking to cross-train!Posted on Kogar Cetinich15 March 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
